The Catholic Appeal is the annual campaign that supports the 50 central ministries carrying out the mission of our Church in the Archdiocese of Boston.
Central ministries help serve the needs of all 289 parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston. While enriching parish life, central ministries also strengthen families, educate and inspire future generations, and help advance Church leadership.
The Appeal provides half of the central ministries' budget of $33.8 million, supporting an overall Archdiocesan budget of $350.7 million. The budget for the Archdiocese is available at: bostoncatholic.org under “Annual Report.”
Parish gifts comprise an essential source of funds that enliven the sacramental life of the parish community and help defray costs that a parish directly incurs. In a similar way, gifts to the Catholic Appeal help support additional programs and services that strengthen parish programs and ministries that serve many throughout the wider Catholic community. Both need our support.
Many of the ministries supported by the Appeal take place in parishes. Adult faith formation ministries currently help parishes administer the small group faith sharing program, Why Catholic?. Religious education ministries oversee programs that teach the fundamentals of our Catholic faith to 114,000 children. Marriage ministries facilitate preparation programs for hundreds of engaged couples each year. Other ministries assist parishes with the practical business matters including budgeting, managing parish property, and benefits for lay parish employees. All these services have a tremendous impact on the vibrancy of parish life. In addition, when parishes exceed their Appeal goal, they receive a rebate that helps supplement a variety of parish needs, such as repairs to the Church or youth summer projects.
